San Antonio, Texas City Guide
Shopping in San Antonio:
Shoppers delight in the many unique stores found within San Antonio. Shops here are not run of the mill. San Antonio's Riverwalk is an amazing waterfront shopping and dining venue. There is also a large Mexican market found within the city.
• Five & Dime General Store: For a taste of yesteryear, the Five & Dime General Store is a real treat. The store takes you back to the days of "five and dimes" where everything you need (books, cleaning supplies, clothing, food items) was found under one roof for a bargain price.
• Market Square: Market Square is as traditional a Mexican market as one will find in the United States. Vendors set up shop in this unique area, but there are also delightful Mexican restaurants, bakeries, fresh produce vendors and even a branch of the Smithsonian Museum.
• Rivercenter Mall: Guests can access Rivercenter Mall by foot or by riverboat taxi. The mall is packed with dozens of typical mall stores (Aeropostale, Gap, Pac Sun) and a few surprises (Magic World, Primarily Purple, the Reservation.) Anchor stores include Macy's and Dillard's.
• Riverwalk: Riverwalk is a free marketplace packed with stores, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels. Located on the banks of the San Antonio River, Riverwalk offers pedestrian-only walkways, riverboat taxi service, and cruises stretching from one end of downtown to another. For a unique experience, the dining cruises sponsored by area restaurants are highly suggested. Rivercenter Mall is part of Riverwalk, so there are plenty of stores to be found!
Things to do in San Antonio:
One or two days will not allow tourists to take in all that San Antonio offers. The Riverwalk alone requires a couple days to explore. Add in other attractions found in and around the city, and you'll quickly find that you need at least a week to even scratch the surface.
• Alamo: Centuries ago the Alamo was the main fighting ground for the battle between Mexico and Texas. Since that day, the Alamo has become a popular attraction. Artifacts from the battle are on display, and the gorgeous buildings and gardens are worth exploring.
• Enchanted Springs Ranch: Enchanted Springs is a 19th century Wild West town. Visitors can take wagon rides to working cattle ranches and tour the old west. Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults.
• Guinness World Records Museum: Located across the street from the Alamo, Guinness World Records Museum features exhibits relating to the world's records held by many throughout the world. The museum also features Ripley's Haunted Adventure, an exciting haunted house and the newly opened Tomb Rider 3D adventure that takes you into the Egyptian tombs.
• Ripley's Believe It or Not/Wax Works: This two-in-one museum features exhibits relating to some of the greatest acts or oddities discovered by Robert Ripley. The second portion of the building contains Louis Tussaud's Wax Works. Wax Works features dozens of realistic wax statues of Hollywood actors, historical, and political leaders.
• San Antonio Botanical Garden: Situated on 33-acres, San Antonio Botanical Garden offers many fragrant and colorful gardens featuring flowers and plants found throughout the world.
• San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium: With close to 4,000 animals, children love the San Antonio Zoo. The zoo incorporates a petting zoo, a huge aquarium, many animal exhibits and the largest collection of birds in the world.
• Sunset Station: Sunset Station is tucked into the historic district of Saint Paul. The area is filled with exquisite restaurants and numerous venues where live music is offered.
• Tower of the Americas: Built for the 1968 World's Fair, Landry's Restaurants own Tower of Americas, but there is more to do than eating. Skies Over Texas, a 4-D ride that takes you over all areas of Texas, is popular with families.
San Antonio is located northwest of Corpus Christi and southwest of Austin. Visitors should have no problem reaching the city, as it is accessible via the I-10, I-35 or I-37. San Antonio International Airport is located north of downtown and offers flights from many major carriers (American, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Mexicana, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, United and US Air.)
